INTERESTED IN CLIMATE CHANGE AND HOW YOU DIRECTLY WILL BE IMPACTED? PASSIONATE ABOUT HOW PROCESSES SHAPE THE WORLD WE LIVE IN? LOVE TO LEARN ABOUT CURRENT EVENTS THAT ARE AFFECTING THE PLANET SUCH AS THE SPREAD OF DISEASE?
Geography explores all of these questions and more. Offering opportunities to study inside and outside the classroom, with field work at Sefton Coastline and the Yorkshire Dales and past trips to Morocco and Spain. Geography covers:
- Water and carbon cycles
- Natural hazards including wildfires and tropical storms
- Global systems and global governance
Geographers are also highly employable with a variety of careers available, such as:
- Surveyor
- Cartographer
- Environmental consultancy
“Geography is an evolving subject with daily events that can shape the course. We do a lot of debating and investigating the content. Group work is key too – particularly when planning out answers. My favourite topic is water and carbon where we investigate the role that rainforests and rivers have in both cycles. 20% of the A-level grade is from an independent piece of coursework and this gives us the opportunity to go on fieldtrips to a variety of places such as the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Sefton coastline and the Wirral.

“I came to Rainhill Sixth because I really enjoyed my time at Rainhill High School and wanted to continue with the supportive environment. I chose to study A Level Geography because it was one of my favourite GCSE subjects. I loved learning about the subject in a lot more depth and detail, as well as gaining a better understanding of Geography in the context of the wider world. Learning about current events taught me the importance of the subject and how it affects everyday life. I also really liked completing my NEA because of how it gave me the opportunity to investigate a topic of my choice that was interesting to me.”
