Rainhill Sixth: A Celebration of Success and the Power of Staying

It was a day of joy and pride at Rainhill Sixth as students and their families celebrated outstanding A-level and Applied General results. The achievements are a true testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, supported by a team of committed staff who have been with them every step of the way.

This year, 91% of our students secured their first-choice university places, surpassing the national average. This success is a reflection of the personalised support and small class sizes that are at the heart of Rainhill Sixth. Our approach ensures that each student receives the attention and guidance they need to excel.

At A-level, an impressive 96% of our students passed all their subjects, with notable progress in Biology, Chemistry, English Literature, French, German, Art Textiles, and Art Graphics. In our Applied General qualifications, every student achieved high grades, with 100% securing a Merit or better in Dance, Applied Science, Sports & Exercise Science, and Health & Social Care.

These results build on our success from previous years and highlight the benefits of continuing your education at Rainhill Sixth. Our close-knit community, enriched ‘super-curriculum,’ and partnership with the Fowler Education and Football Academy (FEFA) have all contributed to this ongoing excellence. Here, we believe in the power of familiarity—staying with the teachers who know you best, in an environment that supports your growth, can make all the difference. As we say, “It Pays to Stay.”

Several students stood out for their exceptional academic performances:

    • Alice Mottershead (A, A, B) is heading to the USA with a scholarship at Florida Tech.

    • Ned Brougham (A, B, B) will be pursuing a Music degree at the University of Manchester.

    • Samara Ball (A, B, D) has earned a place at the prestigious Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA).

    • Ahmed Bashier (A, B, B) has secured a place to study Psychology at the University of Newcastle.

    • Lydia Humphries (B, B, Distinction*) will study Sport & Exercise Science at Manchester Metropolitan University.

    • Billy Jarvis (A, B, Distinction) is set to study Fashion, Business and Promotion at the University of Salford.

    • Alice Lee (A, B, C) has been accepted to the Manchester School of Theatre to study Drama and Contemporary Performance.

Ned Brougham shared his thoughts on his journey at Rainhill:
“I really wanted to study Music at Rainhill, and it’s been fantastic – the teachers have been incredibly helpful. We’d all have been lost without them. I wouldn’t have gone anywhere else.”

Alice Lee echoed this sentiment, saying: “I literally couldn’t have got my ‘A’ without my drama teacher, Mrs Renison. She’s been everything to me, and I can’t praise her enough for everything she does. Rainhill is also unbelievably good at activities outside the classroom – we put on a school show every year and we’ve been to New York twice. It’s developed me as a person.”

Headteacher Josie Thorogood expressed her pride: “All of our students have done exceptionally well, and I couldn’t be more delighted. Rainhill Sixth’s strong record of achievement, combined with our small class sizes and tailored support, shows that our strength lies in our size and approach. Our staff provide exceptional pastoral and academic support, helping students prepare for the best universities and their chosen career paths. The individual attention our students receive allows them to grow in confidence and flourish.”

Josie added, “Our mission is to ensure that every student leaves Rainhill Sixth as a happy, self-assured, and independent individual, ready to take their next steps with confidence. I want to thank our staff, parents, and carers for their continued support and encouragement. Congratulations to the Class of 2024 – your future is bright, and we’re so proud of what you’ve achieved.”
