Progression & Careers

Gatsby benchmarks

Gatsby benchmark 1 – A stable careers programme

We have an embedded programme of career education and guidance that is known and understood by students, parents, teachers, governors and employers.

Gatsby benchmark 2 - Learning from career and labour market information

Every student, and their parents, have access to good quality information about future study options and labour market opportunities. We offer a Year 12 Progression Evening to this end. They have the support of an informed adviser from Careers Connect in school alongside our Sixth Form Progression Mentor.

Gatsby benchmark 3 – Addressing the needs of each pupil

Students have different career guidance needs at different stages. Opportunities for advice and support need to be tailored to the needs of each student. Our careers programme embeds equality and diversity considerations throughout. We have separate groups depending on their progression aspirations.

Gatsby benchmark 4 - Linking curriculum learning to careers

Teachers link curriculum learning with careers. STEM subject teachers highlight the relevance of STEM subjects for a wide range of future career paths. The Science Academy feeds into this well.

Gatsby benchmark 5 – Encounters with employers and employees

Students have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace. This is through a range of enrichment activities including visiting speakers, trips and enterprise schemes.

Gatsby benchmark 6 - Experiences of workplaces

Every student can have first-hand experiences of the workplace through work visits, work shadowing and/or work experience to help their exploration of career opportunities, and expand their networks. We offer a specific week in February for students to complete work experience, we also support work experience at other times of the year where appropriate alongside their studies.

Gatsby benchmark 7 – Encounters with further and higher education

Students understand the full range of learning opportunities that are available to them. This includes both academic and vocational routes and learning in schools, colleges, universities and in the workplace. We offer students specific support and guidance dependent on their possible options post Sixth Form.

Gatsby benchmark 8 – Personal guidance

Every student can have guidance interviews with our career adviser from Careers Connect or our own Progression Mentor. These are available whenever significant study or career choices are being made. This is alongside the excellent personal support in their application process whatever their next steps may be.
