A-level Art Graphics at Rainhill Sixth Form aims to teach you how to think, act and become a contemporary graphic designer. You will be challenged to understand all aspects of successful graphic design which includes in depth focus around essential skills such as: typography, brand identity, brand development and more.

Entry Requirements:
  • 5 GCSEs, grade 4 or above, including Maths. A minimum of a Grade 6 in an Arts subject.

  • Winstanley College – Art Foundation
  • BA (Hons) Fashion Design (Womenswear) at Manchester Metropolitan University
  • BA (Hons) Fashion Image Making and Styling at Salford University

Course Aims

You will work across a wide range of media from simple sketching to highly detailed Adobe Illustrator design work. All work will be underpinned by in-depth studies which will help you write critically about your design ideas and concepts.

The course focus is centered on original design ideas and concepts, coupled with high level outcomes that would be industry ready. Students should have high expectations and will be continually pushed to help explore individual creative boundaries. We aim to offer an innovative, relevant and highly challenging course leading to further study or employment in a wide range of creative fields.

Success rate for students achieving a first choice degree place across the past seven years has been 100%.


Following completion of the course students can continue into Degree studies at Universities or Foundation degree studies at University. Students could also take on design apprenticeships or engage straight into employment. Past students have gone onto work for Nike Europe (Based in Amsterdam) and Elmwood design (Largest design agency in Europe).

The creative industries alone rake in £87.4billion each year to the UK economy, and the future is only looking brighter. Within our Graphic Design course staff will encourage you to develop your own ideas, find your voice and help you to create your own individual language of visual graphic design. The course is a two year, 1 x A-level programme. The weighting of assessment is 60% portfolio and 40% externally set assignment.

The portfolio assignments are set and marked by your teacher and then externally moderated. You will complete 4 projects which will form your portfolio. The externally set assignment will be set by the exam board and marked by your teacher. Following this all examination outcomes are then externally moderated.

Within your year 13 studies it is a requirement of the course to produce an extended piece of critical and contextual writing around 2500 words long to support your personal studies.
