Course Aims

Many science students have academic skills but fewer have the hands-on experience that comes with studying a vocational science course such as the BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Applied Science we deliver here at Rainhill Sixth Form. We collaborate with industry and academia to give you comprehensive access to the skills you will need to progress onto the next stage of your career.

Applied Science is great because you get a little bit of all three sciences. We put a focus on the human body in the optional unit, which is my favourite topic of all. We get to play with the proper KS5 microscopes, as well as some animal organ dissection. The coursework element gives you confidence and there is a strong practical component. There is a whole unit regarding practical investigation skills, so you get the chance to do lots of investigations and get some more experience before labs at Uni

This course is an excellent stepping stone to a whole array of careers including but not limited to; midwifery, biomolecular sciences, radiography, laboratory technician apprenticeships and much more. The course is designed for learners who are interested in learning about the sector alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses or apprenticeships, not necessarily in applied science.

The weighting of assessment is 42% assignments and 58% external assessment.

Equivalent in size to one A Level.

Students must complete 4 units of which 3 are mandatory. 2 of the 4 units are externally assessed.

The assignments are set and marked by your teacher and then externally moderated. You will complete a series of practical tasks set in a work-related scenario.

The controlled assessment (Unit 3) is set and marked by the exam board. You will have to respond to a pre-released brief or complete an online examination. Unit 1 is an external exam covering biology, chemistry and physics subject content.
